Fight for Your Future:

Organize!

Think you’re not an organizer? If you’re a union member, think again. Every union member is an organizer—and that’s YOU!

As a union Boilermaker, you know workers have more power when they organize. In fact, organizing is one of the most important things unions do.

It’s how we make changes happen that benefit everyone. It’s how we build our voice to make sure our demands are heard.

It’s how we fight for our future.

And it’s up to every member to get involved and organize.

We’ve put together resources to help you get started fighting for your future…today!

By the Numbers

Tips to get you started Organizing!

Know your numbers—how many people are members and potential members? Create a database to keep track of membership trends. Train shop stewards—identify new stewards if needed. Find leaders in the workforce. Educate and inoculate!
Use new employee orientations, social media, texting programs, bargaining surveys and mailers to engage with employees on a regular basis.
  • Enlist existing members to invite non-members to meetings.
  • Work with the International to hold steward training and organizing workshops.
  • Create committees to find solutions for active issues at your workplace.
  • Be open to new members’ ideas and get them involved.
Shop stewards are the face of the local—invest in them. Encourage them to assist all potential members and attend some basic training in organizing. Remind them about the Boilermakers’ new member sign-up incentive!
Get your local involved with community activities, parades, events, etc. Make a schedule for site and shop visits so members see you, as a representative, regularly—have the local budget for regular visits, “lunch and learns,” annual family picnics, raffles for members, monthly T-shirt giveaways, hard hat stickers and more.
Stay connected with your members. Energize them by using their passion to activate them into action. Unite them by involving them in group actions. Create an issue campaign and engage them in solving the issue.
